Background of the Study

Cultural practices, including traditional festivals, play a crucial role in shaping political behavior in many parts of the world, including Nigeria (Dogo & Mohammed, 2023). In Fika LGA, Yobe State, traditional festivals serve as platforms for community gatherings, the reinforcement of ethnic identities, and the expression of political allegiances (Aliyu & Abdullahi, 2024). These festivals, which celebrate the cultural heritage of the area, are not just events for socializing but also for political mobilization and public discourse. They often bring together political elites, community leaders, and ordinary citizens, providing a space for the discussion of political issues, the reinforcement of local power structures, and the shaping of political behaviors (Yusuf & Bashir, 2023). This study explores how cultural practices, particularly traditional festivals, influence political behavior in Fika LGA, focusing on their role in voter mobilization, political alliances, and participation in local governance.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the significant role of traditional festivals in the cultural and social life of Fika LGA, their impact on political behavior remains under-researched. The political dynamics surrounding these festivals are not well understood, particularly regarding their influence on political participation, voting patterns, and political affiliations (Abdulkareem & Musa, 2024). This study aims to fill this gap by evaluating how traditional festivals in Fika LGA affect political behavior, including the ways in which they influence voters' attitudes and the political decisions made during elections.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the influence of traditional festivals on political behavior in Fika LGA.

  2. To examine the role of cultural practices in shaping political affiliations and alliances during traditional festivals.

  3. To evaluate how traditional festivals impact voter mobilization and participation in elections in Fika LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do traditional festivals influence political behavior in Fika LGA?

  2. In what ways do traditional festivals shape political affiliations and alliances among participants?

  3. What is the impact of traditional festivals on voter mobilization and participation in elections in Fika LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Traditional festivals in Fika LGA significantly influence political behavior, including voting preferences and political participation.

  2. Cultural practices during traditional festivals shape political affiliations and alliances in Fika LGA.

  3. Participation in traditional festivals positively affects voter mobilization and turnout during elections in Fika LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study contributes to the understanding of how cultural practices influence political behavior, with a focus on traditional festivals as a site of political interaction in Nigeria. The findings will be beneficial for political analysts, policymakers, and community leaders seeking to understand the role of culture in shaping political engagement. Additionally, the study highlights the intersection of culture, politics, and governance, offering insights into ways cultural events can be used to enhance democratic participation.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study is limited to Fika LGA, Yobe State, and specifically examines the role of traditional festivals in shaping political behavior. It does not address other forms of cultural practices or the influence of non-cultural factors on political behavior.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Cultural Practices: The traditions, customs, and behaviors that are characteristic of a particular group or community, including festivals, rituals, and ceremonies.

  • Political Behavior: Actions and attitudes related to political participation, including voting, political affiliations, and engagement in public discourse.
